Learning how to Adapt: Stories from Indigenous elders and youth on Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
10:30  to  11:00 v Action Hub
Regional Community Forestry Training Centre for Asia Pacific (RECOFTC)

As global temperatures threaten to break through the 1.5-degree ceiling by the end of the century, the need to adapt becomes ever more pressing. Adaptation solutions tend to center around infrastructure and technological solutions. While discussions and efforts are increasing shifting focus towards Nature-based Solutions, one field rich with potential wisdom has received very little attention to date: the role of TEK in informing our adaptation pathways. This interactive, storytelling Action Hub event will be designed as a TED-style talk, featuring the rich awareness and wisdom possessed by Indigenous Peoples and sub-sections such as elders and women in particular. Through this event, we hope to highlight specific strategies and knowledge that may lead to innovations in our own design of adaptation interventions. Each of the two speakers will have 15 minutes to share stories on how their people respond to climatic impacts such as drought, flooding, disasters, soil fertility and changes in forest and biodiversity composition. We envision a powerful, colorful dialogue bringing the spotlight to this invaluable human resource.

Scaling Up Green and Smart Grid Investments to Accelerate Deployment of Renewable Energy
17:00  to  18:00 v Tanjung Puteri 304
The World Bank

Transmission is a key enabler of clean power generation as the lines and substations need to be built first to encourage investments in generation. For countries with ambitious plans to increase the share of renewable energy (RE) in power generation in the next 5 to 20 year transmission is becoming a major bottleneck to large-scale adoption of RE. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates show that the financing requirement for grid expansion and modernization will increase from $75 billion to $325 billion annually by 2030, which represents approximately 34% of the total investment by emerging market and developing economies to achieve net zero in the power sector. While the public sector has traditionally played a large role in financing transmission investments, mobilization of private capital is critical to address the significant financing needs for green transmission. Concessional resources are also needed to support developing countries. At this event, thought leaders and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors will converge to explore innovative solutions and actionable strategies, and provide examples in Asia-Pacifc region and other relevant examples for planning and financing green and smart power grids. The session aims to (1) Share good practices in green and smart transmission planning; (2) Showcase business models that optimize/leverage constrained public financing leading to efficient and modern grid systems; (3) present the complementarity and synergies among various initiatives and funding mechanisms to support countries in responding to scaling up clean energy and the need for a modern power grid

Leveraging Carbon Markets for Energy Transition in Emerging Economies
17:00  to  18:00 v Pantai Lido 203
WRI India and UNFCCC-IGES RCC Asia Pacific UNFCCC High-Level Climate Champions Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership WRI Indonesia Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)

As emerging economies in the Asia Pacific enhance their climate ambition, there is a need for NDCs and LT-LEDS to align with an accelerated pace of global change, as revealed in the Global Stocktake. Carbon market mechanisms can offer flexibility and finance for meeting emission reduction targets thereby encouraging more ambitious decarbonization goals and cost-effective clean energy transitions. In recent years, amidst Article 6 negotiations, several jurisdictions have considered leveraging carbon markets, e.g. India has launched a carbon market. At the same time, there is a need for integrity and robustness in the use of carbon markets to foster credible and sustained decarbonization while addressing concerns to stakeholders and economies. The proposed event will bring together policymakers, experts, and practitioners who will discuss the challenges and opportunities of using carbon markets to accelerate energy transitions in emerging economies, examining different national circumstances and sharing country experiences.
